Announcement: 31st March 2020
We are very pleased to announce the appointment of a new Priest-in-Charge for St Peter’s. The Reverend Steffan Mathias has accepted the offer of the role. Fr Steffan has put together a short introduction which you can see below. Fr Steffan was ordained in 2017 and is currently the assistant curate at St Mary the Virgin, Lewisham.
At this point, the Coronavirus situation makes planning for Fr Steffan’s move to St Peter’s difficult. All clergy movements have been put on hold, and, before Fr Steffan can move, the St Peter’s Vicarage needs some important work doing to it. This work cannot begin until there is free movement again. So while we cannot give a date for when Fr Steffan will arrive, it will be a few months after life gets back to normal; but this will enable Fr Steffan to say a proper farewell to the people of St Mary the Virgin Lewisham and to get himself ready to move to Streatham.
At the time of writing, Fr Steffan is recovering from the Coronavirus himself. Please hold him in your prayers as he prepares to leave St Mary the Virgin in Lewisham and come to St Peter’s and especially as he recovers from the virus.
Hello! I’m Fr Steffan, and it’s wonderful to be able to introduce myself to you all at St Peter’s.
I thought I would tell you a little bit about my background. I was born in South London, in Wallington, but grew up mostly near Carmarthen in South Wales, where my parents are from – though I managed to ditch the Welsh accent when I moved back to London! South London has been home again for the past 15 years, and after living in Brixton, Camberwell, and Lewisham, Streatham I know will feel like home. Before ministry, as well as different jobs I was lucky enough to do a PhD in Biblical Studies, and the bible is a real passion of mine. I trained at the College of the Resurrection, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. The last three years I’ve been curate at St Mary the Virgin, Lewisham - a great community, in a fun but challenging area, and it’s been a fantastic place to learn and grow into ministry. In my spare time, I love cooking, theatre and cinema, and exploring what London has to offer.
I’m incredibly excited to come to St Peter’s, to get to know the congregation, to explore Streatham, and to help lead where God is calling us to go. From what I’ve already seen there is so much to celebrate – great people, beautiful music, an amazing church – and it’s a real privilege to come and serve you as your priest. I know it’s a strange time now, with Church unable to meet, but I am already praying daily for St Peter’s. We might not know what the next few months will bring, but I have faith that through this God will be teaching us, and we will come out stronger the other side. I can’t wait to celebrate with you all – please keep me in your prayers over the coming weeks and months as I prepare to join you.
