Sunday 10.30am: This is the main Parish act of worship, which is a Eucharist with Sermon and choir with hymns and an anthem. It is a longer service than the 8.00am Eucharist. St. Peter’s has a long history of providing very good choral music. We have an active Sunday School for children aged between 3yrs and 10yrs and this is open to any visitors who may come with young children.
St. Peter’s offers the following services each week:
Sunday 8.00am: Short Parish Eucharist. This lasts about 30-40 minutes. It is a spoken service with a short address. There are no hymns, and it is often favoured by those who would like a shorter and quieter service early on a Sunday morning. We hold our 8.00am Eucharist in the Lady Chapel.
Sunday 6.30pm: Choral Evensong (Book of Common Prayer) with devotions before the Blessed Sacrament. This is an opportunity to just take time out after a busy week and listen to some beautiful choral music within the context of Evensong. This service is mainly sung by the choir and lasts about 50 minutes.
St. Peter’s Church has a long tradition of being an Anglo-Catholic Parish, people often call this a high church parish as incense is used, and we hold the sacraments very highly, especially the Eucharist where we receive the body and blood of Jesus under the guise of bread and wine. This for the Confirmed Christian is the spiritual nourishment required to feed our spiritual life on our Christian journey.
The Sunday Eucharist is the gathering of the Christian family, it is not just a religious experience but a social one as well. It is an opportunity to meet others and to make new friends. All are welcome to come and take part in our worship and the invitation is open to those who are confirmed, or not confirmed, to those who are baptised or non-baptised.
We pray for all those who live in our parish daily at our services, especially on a Sunday evening when, during the service we read out the names of those who are resident in the parish and their families, this includes our regular worshippers who have registered with us and we pray for them in particular. We use the Anglican cycle of prayer that is issued by the Diocese of Southwark monthly to all parishes, where we pray daily for the work of the wider diocese and the parishes, clergy and people of our diocese. We also use this opportunity to pray for the churches, clergy and people overseas.
Weekday Services: There are services on a Tuesday at 10.00am, a Wednesday at 7.30pm, on a Thursday at 10.00am and a Saturday at 10.00am. These are again a Eucharistic service which will last about 30 minutes. We welcome all ages to all of our services. They are held in our smaller Lady Chapel.
